1903: "There is not much to see here though the harbour is very fine."
A wonderfully detailed view of shop street.

c1900: A run-down Lynch Memorial window on Market St.

c1930: Two different cards depicting the memorial on Market Street.

 1950s: The Four Corners.

c1905: Image of Shop Street, probably taken from an upstairs window at junction with High Street.

The large building on the left is now Easons, with Church Lane heading left at the side of it.

The arch on the right leads to Buttermilk Lane.

1960s: A flash car outside one of Galway's first supermarkets.

c1905: William Street, with Dillon's clock showing "Dublin Time".

Barely visible at the foot of Prospect Hill is one of the toll booths used to collect excise on goods entering the city.

c1925: Quiet, bi-directional traffic going through the town?

Of course, according to the census, Galway's population then was only about 13,000!

c1940: Newer cars, and wires crossing the street, but still plenty of room for a couple of horses and carts!

This image was kindly supplied by Kevin Newell, whose grandfather was born in the shoe shop on the right hand side.

1950: A rare image of Buttermilk Lane, when it still had many inhabited buildings.

The famous oriel window, reputedly a lodging place of Daniel O'Connell, is just right-of-centre.

1958: Saturday market outside St. Nicholas' Church. Corner of what is now Geraghty's visible on the right.

1950s: Spot the busker or hawker. Oh - there aren't any!
