Medieval Masonry
All around Galway there is evidence of the old city: castles, townhouses, churches, and all sorts of reused stonework. There's a lot more of it there than most people realise - they never look above eye level where the gaudy shop windows are, or even at beautiful medieval buildings - often hidden in plain sight!
To help you see some of this hidden (and not-so-hidden) heritage, here are a few photos I took recently to give you an idea of what's there if you open your eyes a little. It's by no means an authoritative catalogue (there are many more interesting pieces of medieval stonework around, and many in private buildings), but it's a good place for you to start.
Also, Lynch's Castle and St. Nicholas' Church have their own slide show
here.
